Young Leaders Develop Skills, Confi dence at Conference

Rooter Brite, center, talked about his experi- ences as a lifelong rancher in a family-owned business. Gordon Sauer and Jim Link, not pictured but seated across from Brite, were also part of this discussion, answering many questions during the 2-hour session.

T

HE VOLUNTEER LEADERS OF THE YOUNG LEADERSHIP SERIES (YLS) program at Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association (TSCRA) hosted the fi rst

YLS Leadership Conference, July 24 and 25, at the as- sociation headquarters in Fort Worth. More than 20 young cattle raisers, ages 40 and

younger, signed up for the Conference that offered an afternoon session on leadership training by Scott Abel with the Anne Grady Group, and ample time to talk with TSCRA offi cers and directors through panel discussions and breakout sessions. Lengthy breaks and the overall informal nature of

the Conference fostered a give-and-take atmosphere that led to good discussions of the practical issues of the business of ranching. The Conference was sponsored by Merck Animal

Health, and was organized by April Bonds, Saginaw, Mandy Dauses, Kemp; Dr. Kim McCuistion, Kingsville; LeMoine Knox, Coleman; Cody Fry, Armstrong; Rocky Sullivan, Galveston; and Dr. Ryan Rhoades, Kingsville. Many thanks to the TSCRA offi cers and directors who served on the panels — Pete Bonds, president; Richard Thorpe, fi rst vice president; Gordon Sauer, Fredericks- burg; Jim Palmer, Matador; Jim Link, Crowley; Rooter Brite, Bowie; Curtis Younts, Belton; and Joe Leathers, Guthrie.
