Excellent customer relationships at the heart of Europa Components’ 40 years of success
Understanding what electrical wholesale customers want has been core to Europa Components’ success over the last 40 years. Here, readers can find out about what has made the company so successful – from its innovative product range to its popular catalogue, technical support and quick turnaround of orders.
I
t is 40 years since the birth of Europa Components, which itself followed a similar period of business in the
manufacture of test equipment and meters, set up by the current Managing Director’s father. After the sale of that business, Europa was
formed to initially supply electronic components to major catalogues such as Farnell and RS Components, both of which are still among the Company’s largest customers.
Whilst this business proved to be very successful, the current MD, David Sheridan, on joining the business in 1983, soon realised that purely selling electronic components was not viable in the longer term. The decision was, therefore, taken to move into the traditional electrical wholesale sector with electrical products and components. Very quickly, the company became the
largest independent supplier of fuses and from this base, has since added a broad range of products, largely in the control gear sector. Originally based in Elstree, Europa stayed in
Hertfordshire, but moved on to Borehamwood in 1997 and then to substantially larger premises in Luton in 2008. Now, even this site at 3,000 square metres is proving to be insufficient and the company are currently sourcing additional storage to cope with the need to match stock levels with increasing sales. Europa now employs 45 staff in Luton, which includes sales, marketing and finance, the logistics function, plus a rapidly expanding assembly area.
Building successful customer relationships At the heart of Europa’s success has undoubtedly been their concentration on meeting the needs of their customers. Being a family business, they have built up a dedicated and friendly in house team, with many long serving members, whose core values and ethics extend to their day to day dealings with customers. There is also a wealth of product knowledge
available from the technical team of experienced engineers, where help or advice is needed. Market trends are constantly monitored to identify the best mix of products to offer customers, with all products in the Europa range certified to the required industry standards in order to offer guaranteed safety and peace of mind. Stock levels are held at a level where 95% of all
orders can be delivered next day complete and on time. So service, whether pre or post-delivery, is a key driver in Europa’s success, but undoubtedly ●Continued over
