For over 40 years, Japanese-born choreographer/ dancers Eiko and Koma have created astoundingly beautiful dances characterized by highly theatrical elements integrating stillness, shape, light, and sound. Now Eiko performs her first solo project, A Body in Places, inspired by a trip to Fukushima. Performed in a yet-to-be-determined non-traditional venue, Eiko responds to the space and explores elements of solitude, gaze, fragility, and intimacy. In conjunction with this performance, the Flynn’s Amy E. Tarrant Gallery presents a photo exhibition by William Johnston, featuring images of Eiko in radiation-affected Fukushima (March 4 through May 28, 2016).

Backed by drums and violins, Tanya Tagaq’s unique vocal expression is rooted in Inuit throat singing but has as much to do with electronica, industrial, and metal influences as it does with traditional culture. Watching Tagaq perform is a physical and emotional experience, as she “unleashes something fierce and powerful that comes from deep within her body, yet seems positively unearthly” (Musicworks).
