The 24/7 Hot Food Service For The Workplace

Reducing costs and extending the service W

ith the workplace becoming increasingly a 24/7 operation and the introduction of continental shift patterns what are the problems HR and facility managers are experiencing in feeding their employees while keeping within tight budgets?

The problems fall into two main categories: Firstly, there is the

situation where a catering service is available but is costly to provide, particularly for night shifts and weekend working. Secondly, where there is no on-site service, and you cannot justify the cost of a canteen. These are the problems that Bon Appetit has been providing a

solution for over the past 11 years with its 24/7 hot food vending service. Examples from the 2 main problem areas will illustrate our solution. Firstly in workplaces where night shift and weekend canteens can

often be underused by staff the typical cost of £200/shift can be expensive. The Bon Appetit service is typically just 10% of this cost, and is available all day, every day! The service really comes into its own as a cost effective solution to consider for ‘out of hours’ catering. Keys sectors this applies to are call centres, hospitals & distribution sites. The second category includes distribution sites, which although

they operate 24/7, frequently are not catered for, and only have basic vending services of drinks and confectionary. Amazon distribution centres in and around London are examples of sites that have benefitted from the Bon Appetit service. Employees now have access to 24/7 hot food, which has improved staff morale and productivity. Apart from solving these problems, what are HR and facility

managers looking for from a hot food service? Bon Appetit’s experience reveals that employers are looking for a service that: • Satisfies the needs of their employees for a 24/7 hot food service • Is a cost effective solution • Provides the option of being self managed as well as fully managed

• Can work alongside an existing restaurant service • Has minimum space requirements Bon Appetit provide a free tasting for staff before a business

commits to take the service, with staff having the opportunity to sample products from the menu to assess the food for taste, quality and variety. Staff feedback on the tastings regularly provides a 90% rating of the food sampled being either good or very good, which gives management confidence that the service will be well used. Bon Appetit provides a fully managed service or the option of a

self managed service, whereby clients or their caterer restock the vending machine from an onsite supply. Both services include equipment and full maintenance.

20 The self managed service has been particularly popular with our

NHS clients. The Bon Appetit service is currently being used to feed doctors, nurses and visitors in over 25 NHS hospitals. The Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children is a good example. The GOSH Facilities Manager had the need to provide hot and cold food for visitors & staff outside of the daytime restaurant hours. Extending the catering hours to provide a 24/7 service was not economically feasible. He had to find an alternative and he found Bon Appetit by googling ‘hot food vending’. During these times when the emphasis is on reducing costs, the manager commented that the new service was ‘well received by both visitors and staff, and has satisfied a key need of ours in a most cost effective way.’ There are over 480 hospitals in England alone that could potentially use our round the clock service to feed their doctors, nurses AND visitors. The equipment set up (which clients find visually appealing)

requires minimal space as the footprint is only 2 metres wide by 1 metre deep. The power requirement is only 4 wall sockets. But what about the employees? What are they looking for from a

hot food service? With the average UK lunch break being only 29 minutes, Bon Appetit’s research is that employees are looking for a service that provides: • A fast and convenient service • Tasty food that is good quality • Healthy options • Variety and choice The Bon Appetit service has focused on satisfying all of these

requirements. The key to our service is the food. The demand is for high quality, great tasting food, which is quick to prepare. The Bon Appetit menu offers a choice of 44 high quality branded products, and is divided into Breakfasts, which includes our best selling sausage & bacon breakfast muffins, Snacks, with offerings such as 1/4 pound cheeseburger and spicy potato wedges, and Handmade Meals, such as chicken tikka and cottage pie. We also offer a range of Weightwatchers meals, with healthier choices making up 40% of the food choices. The most popular items take just 1 minute to heat in the bar code scanner microwaves provided, which are simple to use. Award winning Bon Appetit has produced a report ’11 Top Tips on
