able Arm Inc., a manufacturer of environmental dredging buckets is making its products more wear
resistant by using SSAB’s Hardox 500 Tube. Te material is being used for cable guides in a spreader bar to eliminate premature wear to the crane’s cable liners. Ray Bergeron, owner and designer of the Cable Arm buckets, also chose the material to combat corrosion.
Te bucket is designed to allow
the removal of any hazardous content from the waterways while reducing contaminated sediments from getting back into the water column. Every bucket is unique, having been crafted for each order. In this case, the earlier design had the spreader bar on its cable-operated bucket with hardened steel roller cable guides on the shafts, but over time these rollers started to bind to the shafts as a result of corrosion, aggravated by a salty environment. By removing the shafting and inserting the Hardox
500 tubing pieces into the spreader side plates and capping them, lateral movement is removed while drainage is retained.
Cable Arm has also developed
a hydraulically operated dredging bucket that uses Hardox 500. In this application it is used more for strength, prohibiting the sides of the bucket from flexing in or out. SSAB has been producing Hardox tubes in Borlänge since October 2013. Fredrik Mikaelsson, manager, Tubes
& Sections, says, “Te Hardox tubes are roll-formed welded tubes that are quenched after welding. Trough our short time on the market, we have proven its high degree of consistency on mechanical properties as well as straightness and roundness. Te business is still very young, but sales volume is growing as is the interest.” One Australian company that offers a plethora of wear resistant materials is Calyco. Te company produces abrasion-resistant rubber-backed ceramic mats that are designed and manufactured by vulcanising 92%
