good results. Te trucks generally run at around 34-35% load factor, shifting a mixture of overburden and stripping. Total engine running costs, including scheduled maintenance and unplanned events are now predicted to be 60 or even 65% cheaper. Scow adds, “Te mine truck re-power programme continues to make good progress and is meeting performance targets with regard to lower fuel burn, higher uptime availability and payload requirements.” Overall the mine is reporting an
average increase in fuel economy of around 8.6%, helped no doubt that the new engines are some 9,000 lb lighter than the original units. Drivers report a 5mph increase in top speed when loaded as well as a significant reduction in noise. Keith Kenyon, maintenance superintendent at ASARCO Ray Mine, comments, “Our operators are happy. I have heard my operators more than once say, ‘is the truck even running?”
As well as general comfort, this has increased safety as the in-cab radios are now easier to hear.

concentrator, a 103 million pound/year solvent extraction-electrowinning operation, and associated maintenance, warehouse and administrative facilities.
Last word goes to Megan Sewell, who has been driving the Liebherr T282B for three years: “Te engine is so much quieter. If another truck with the original engine is next to you, you almost can’t hear your own engine.” She adds: “Also, before with the
previous engine I’d be filling with 700 gallons, but now on the same program it is taking about 200 gallons less. So we can be getting as much as three additional runs before refuelling.” l
