Driven to extremes A
SARCO Ray in the Arizona desert is a 250,000 ton/day open pit copper mine where the operator has been
engaged in a giant engine upgrade programme for its 400 ton Liebherr T282B trucks, replacing the original MTU 20V4000 Tier 1 units with Cummins QSK60s. Tese Tier 2 certified engines are 60.2 litre capacity, with a V16 configuration, and are offered in various ratings from 1782 – 2850 BHP, and this higher figure is the one used at ASARCO Ray. Four extra turbochargers with intercoolers are mounted on top of the unit, these were specified due to the altitude and power requirements. Over the past three years Cummins has been involved in re-powering more than 100 machines at the mine, including
drill rigs, dozers, water trucks, cable reelers and generators. To facilitate a three-day-maximum on-site turnaround for each engine swap, the ancillaries are re-used where possible, including the main traction alternator and its associated hydraulics, with only minor modifications to the side where it mates with the engine.
