Summer Meeting Takes Cattle Raisers to the Beach

By Ellen H. Brisendine, ehbrisendine@tscra.org Y

OUR ASSOCIATION IS TRYING SOMETHING DIFFERENT NEXT MONTH. OUR SUMMER MEET- ing is Thursday, June 25, to Saturday, June 27, at Moody Gardens in

Galveston. That’s not the new thing. We’ve met in Galveston before. Our meeting schedule is new — a shorter schedule of Cattle Raiser meet-

ings, held earlier in the day and ending on Saturday, so you’ll have good reason to stay another day (or several) to enjoy the Texas coast. Honorary Director John Sullivan and his family have been instrumental

in helping plan fun events for attendees to enjoy after the morning meet- ings. Visit www.tscra.org/summermeeting for hotel information and to register for the meeting. The last time we met on the Gulf Coast it was such a pleasure to see

members and their families from the southern half of the state. I look for- ward to seeing you all again in June. This month we focus on water issues in The Cattleman. Katrina Huff-

stutler, former member of The Cattleman staff and now owner of Cactus Flower Communications, has been saving her thoughts and making notes for more than a year to bring us her article, “Every Drop Counts.” Since she and her family are based in Electra, one of the areas of Texas

hardest hit by heat and drought, we asked her to document what it has been like living in Stage 5 drought. The important things in life become crystal clear when lack of water makes the unimportant literally wither and burn. For those who are interested in harnessing solar power at the ranch,

Robert Fears provides an article on using the sun to power pumps in water wells. This topic was one of the many well-attended sessions at the 2015 Cattle Raisers Convention in March in Fort Worth. We’ll have more cover- age in the June issue, but feel free to take a look at convention highlights at www.tscra.org. Just click on the red convention button in the right column. Back to my fi rst point, registration for the Texas and Southwestern Cattle

Raisers Association (TSCRA) summer meeting is open to any member or friend of TSCRA. I hope you’ll join us for interesting meetings and times of fun and relaxation.
