Low-maintenance drives for food processing
t the Anuga FoodTec exhibition in Cologne, Germany, NORD DRIVESYSTEMS will present distributed drive concepts that meet the typical demands of the food industry. Variable-speed drives with IP66/IP69K ingress protection are suitable for processes that require regular cleaning with high- pressure steam jets.
A All components are
manufactured in-house: gearboxes, smooth-surface motors, and frequency inverters. The nsd tupH anti- corrosion treatment gives the aluminum housings a smooth and durable surface. Even blows and scratches do not impair the corrosion resistance. Since no coating is applied but the surface itself is hardened, there can be no pollution of products or process media as for instance with chipping paint. The nsd tupH treatment is approved for food applications according to FDA Title 21 CFR 175.300. Trade show visitors will be able to see nsd tupH drives that have performed in a salty atmosphere for one year and were removed for demonstration purposes.

efood’s state-of-the-art anaerobic digestion plant in Widnes is a first-class recycling technology
alternative. Diverting food waste from landfill, Refood is a trusted choice when converting commercial business food waste into green energy. For a recent application for the Widnes site, heat transfer specialist Fulton successfully tendered for the supply of a packaged hot water boiler system consisting of 12 FHE- 250 modular hot water boilers. Commercial food waste delivered to the Refood site is processed through an anaerobic digester, a natural method that – working in a similar way to a compost heap but on an industrial scale and in the absence of oxygen – biologically breaks down food material to produce biogas. Once the biogas is upgraded to the standard required, it is then injected back into the national grid.

New Miniature Low-level Force Sensor T
he new Type 9215A miniature force sensor from Kistler Instruments is only 23.3mm long and 6.0mm diameter and weighs only 2.5g making it ideal for both laboratory and industrial applications where space is at a premium. This highly sensitive, piezoelectric force sensor is suitable for measuring quasi-static and dynamic tensile and compression forces from 1mN to 200N in three calibrated ranges. The sensor has a sealed DIN 1.4542 stainless steel body with an M5x0.5 external mounting thread and an M2 tapped bore for force input.
The
highly sensitive measuring element fitted under low preload gives the sensor very high rigidity with simultaneously low sensitivity to transverse force and acceleration over the -50°C to +180°C operating temperature range. The versatility offered by the three measuring ranges, 2N, 20N and 200N, and the low force sensitivity make the new sensor exceptionally suited to a wide range of applications in product testing and for highly sensitive force measurements in research and development.
