ADVERTORIAL TECHNOLOGY IN ACTION

Versatile drive systems for intelligent intra-logistics N

Combining mechanical interlocks with process safety sensors

I n the process industry, mechanical interlocks

guarantee strict adherence to procedures and help avoid human error. They are particularly useful for highly dangerous operations such as pigging and valve changeover procedures. While interlocks ensure extremely high safety levels, they usually function as stand-alone safety systems. New digital technologies are now emerging that enable traditional interlocking to be combined with digital process control and instrumentation systems. Smith Flow Control is the first company to combine these mutually beneficial technologies in the development of the SmartTrap+, which incorporates signals from sensors into the interlocking sequence. During a pigging operation certain safety conditions need to be met: the vessel pressure should be at a safe level and all dangerous gases and residue must be removed before opening the pig door.

ORD DRIVESYSTEMS supply versatile, smart drives for conveyor and warehouse technology. At the LogiMAT

trade show in Stuttgart, Germany, the company will showcase powerful mechatronics units that integrate electric motors, gearboxes, and drive electronics, all manufactured in-house. NORD drive concepts support a straightforward variant management. Intelligent power electronics with integrated custom- configured PLC modules are available with a comprehensive functional range including interfaces to all standard bus systems. Even today, variable-speed drives from NORD provide servo dynamics to meet the intra-logistics challenges of tomorrow. Both, frequency inverters for installation on or near the motor and cabinet inverters manage dynamic synchronization, highly precise positioning, as well as safety- critical hoisting. PSL Datatrack software gives seychell production control

S

eychell Engineering, a highly successful manufacturer of bespoke engineering products, uses

modular PSL

Datatrack production management software to provide a very efficient and accurate method of pricing jobs, together with management of the manufacturing process. The company has a good customer base in the scientific, medical, aerospace, marine and motor sport sectors and keeping control is essential. The company uses PSL Datatrack for quotations invoicing, job costing, purchase invoicing, scheduling and shop floor data collection – these latter modules give customers very accurate delivery date estimates. Seychell can also monitor machining and process times to enhance efficiency.

New EtherNet/IP and Profinet modules for PNOZmulti 2 controller P

ilz is launching two new Ethernet modules for adding either EtherNet/IP or Profinet communications to its PNOZmulti 2 modular configurable control system for safety and automation functions. As an open, configurable control system, the PNOZmulti 2 can be used flexibly across industry, independently of the

higher-level operational control system. The new expansion modules allow for flexible communication between PNOZmulti 2 controllers and others such as those from Rockwell or Siemens.

The PNOZmulti 2 provides easy-to-read diagnostic data and enables virtual inputs/outputs to be used for non-safety-related functions. User-friendly diagnostic and control information reduces downtime and increases plant availability. An integrated Ethernet switch provides collision-free data traffic and enables several communication partners to use the interface simultaneously. Virtual inputs and outputs are configured easily on a PC using the PNOZmulti Configurator

drag-and-drop software tool, which helps to avoid the need for time-consuming, error-prone wiring. The PNOZmulti 2 configurable control systems can be used as a standalone controller or as modular expandable version connected to other PNOZmulti 2 controllers. Pilz says that the EtherNet/IP or Profinet modules are just the latest additions to the range of communication modules available for the PNOZmulti 2. Other modules enable users to connect the PNOZmulti 2 to, for example, Profibus-DP, CANopen, Modbus TCP, EtherCAT and Ethernet Powerlink networks for transferring diagnostic and status information to higher-level control systems. There is also a module for transmitting data via RS232.
