Cattle Raisers Offers Resources for Small Ranching Businesses

Michele Woodham D

ID YOU KNOW CATTLE RAISERS INSURANCE CAN HELP WITH small group employer medical quotes for your

ranching or related business? Small group employer health plans are designed

for businesses with 2 to 50 employees. A small em- ployer normally offers coverage to full-time employ- ees (those who work 30 hours or more per week) on a regular basis. Employers may not discriminate when deciding who

they want to consider eligible for coverage. In general, insurance companies require at least

75 percent of a small employer’s eligible employees to participate in the health plan. Employers are required by state law to pay 50 percent

of the employee-only health premiums. This require- ment is meant to encourage more employees to enroll in the medical plan. Employers do not have an obligation to pay for pre-

miums for dependents of their employees. The health status of employees will not impact rates. Small employers are guaranteed group coverage.

Factors that are considered Insurance companies will consider these factors

when calculating premiums for a small group quote. • Age of employees Older individuals usually have more expensive and more frequent health-related claims. Generally, the

older your workforce, the more your plan will cost. However, federal law prevents insurers from charg- ing more than 3 times more for older employees than they charge for younger employees.

• Tobacco use Federal law allows health plans to charge tobacco users up to 50 percent more. Texas law requires that the rating factors related to health status be spread across the employer group. A group with more to- bacco users will pay higher rates than a group with fewer tobacco users.

• Geographic area Health care costs vary by region because of differ- ences in the cost of living and the number of pro- viders in the area. Most plans use either the county or ZIP code of the employer’s business address to base rates.
