Contents Dear Reader,

Welcome to the latest issue of Education Today. With the general election now just months away, I’ve noticed that education seems not to be at the top of the politicians’ agenda. David Cameron has pledged to increase the number of free schools being opened, and Labour have made some noises about student debt, but it’s apparent that the days of manifesto pledges about “education, education, education” seem to be behind us. I was on the radio recently, talking about free schools in Berkshire, and I made the point that the English educational landscape now feels fairly “set” – whichever party comes to power (or whichever coalition, as looks increasingly likely), there doesn’t seem to be a huge appetite for remodelling the education system in this country. Teachers may well breathe a sigh of relief at this, but I do sometimes wonder whether the way our children are schooled is equipping them for life in the 21st century. Time will tell, no doubt.

Moving on to the issue, we have the usual mix of news, views and products for you. We look at the upcoming Education Show (we'll be there!) and pick out some of the speakers you'll be hearing from. In our feature on tackling childhood obesity, we look at a great new programme in Oldham which gives children the confidence to address their weight issues and get fit and active. It’s a fantastic project and it deserves to be nationally recognised. Finally, in our third feature, Joe Scaife, head of the academies team at accountants Bishop Fleming, looks at multi-academy trust funding and offers some pointers for the future.

In our comment pages, we have our regular contributors Charlotte Beckhurst, Kirsty Bertenshaw and Alicia Blanco-Bayo offering their usual thoughtful pieces, as well as a number of other excellent contributors from across the education spectrum. Remember, you can get in touch with us via Twitter, Facebook and our homepage, as well as by phone and email. We always like to hear from you so please do get in touch! Enjoy the issue!
