Guest Column Woodworking Tools and

Equipment By Craig Phillips Woodworkers tend to have a very specific set of tools that they can use across a wide range of jobs. Often the starting point is a good quality workbench that allows you to secure your wood in place for planing and sawing. A sturdy workbench with at least a 3 solid top, strong supportive base legs, and two strong wooden face vices will usually be suitable for a variety of tasks. Hand saws are used for rough cutting a board to an approximate size. At

least two types of hand saw are an essential for many woodworkers: ‘rip’ saws and ‘cross cut’. The most commonly used is the rip saw which are simple to sharpen and refurbish. Cross cut panel saws are used for rough cutting a board to a rough length, across the grain. Their teeth are shaped like knives so they can cut across the wood fibres. Back saws are used for more fine accurate work while making wooden joints (like dovetail joints). When it comes to

selecting a set of chisels, it is worth going for some which are top quality as they will be used for years on nearly any project imaginable. The main type of chisels that you’ll want to buy are ‘paring chisels’, ‘bench chisels’ and ‘mortising chisels’. One of the most important aspects of traditional woodwork is to have extremely sharp tools, particularly chisels,

and improperly sharpened equipment can lead to sub-standard work that takes much longer than it needs to. Using a grinder with a cool cutting stone and good quality water stones is the most efficient method, I find. Sandpaper sharpening works, but is more expensive in the long run. A good wooden mallet is vital for traditional woodworking and a good, old-

fashioned Carpenter’s mallet usually does the job! Wooden mallets are mostly used for hitting your chisels when cutting joints such as dovetail joints or chopping mortises. Block planes have become one of the most often-used tools in a traditional-

style workshop. They can be used to trim your joints, trim end grain, etc, and a low angle block plane lets you cut difficult grain more easily. Some of the most common joints cut on are grooves, especially for furniture projects. Though it is one of the lesser known woodworking tools, a plow plane is one of the most useful tools a woodworker can have, and come in different sizes and styles, both wooden and metal. Woodworking clamps hold your freshly glued up joints together until the glue

hardens. To start off with I would recommend buying at least one quality “hand screw clamp” (around 10 or 12 inches) and a few bar-type clamps. Woodworking is an intricate and highly-skilled craft, and the right set of tools

is a must for all who are practising the craft. Craig is the official brand ambassador for Blåkläder workwear, which
