During February Peter Brett, Matthew and I travelled to Coventry twice to visit shows at the Ricoh Arena. The Executive Hire Show, as the name would suggest concentrates on the companies that supply to the hire industry. It was a busy show – see the report on page 22 of this issue. A few days later it was the turn of Totally Tools Totally DIY. As luck would have it, I spent the previous weekend attending a wedding in Coventry, so not so far to travel on the Monday morning! This is a great show for new products and innovations and the New Product Showcase arena particularly, was well worth a visit. The report of this show is on pages 10 to 12. The feeling amongst exhibitors and visitors , at both shows, was largely positive

with a definite air of optimism for the future of the trade. A visit to the Birmingham Innovations stand at Totally Tools Totally DIY bore this out, where a very enthusiastic team were showcasing the latest innovative and unique products. If you have a great idea or a ready made invention you feel has potential, this company would be a good place to start to explore bringing it to market. A video of one of their products is posted on our Video Showcase on the magazine website - visit www.toolbusiness.co.uk and take a look! Hopefully, after the fast approaching election this general optimism will continue and

the UK will continue to climb out of recession. Interestingly, as I write this it has been announced that government finances showed a surplus of 38.8bn in January, the

highest surplus for seven years. Before we all get too excited this is largely caused by the fact that self-assessment forms are submitted and corporation tax paid at the end of January, so this is traditionally a good month for the treasury! However tax receipts were higher than expected and the government borrowing for the month was £6bn below that for the same time last year.

Higher employment is one reason for these better than expected receipts, which were also boosted by higher spending

figures. The employment rate stood at 73.2% for the last quarter of 2014 – the last time it was this high was in December to February 2005. Long-term unemployment has fallen, but unfortunately youth unemployment remains stubbornly high at 16.2%. More needs to be done to address this as a priority for whoever wins power in May. As well as the show reports, with information in the Show News feature of those exhibitions up and coming too, there are

five product reviews this month, three related to the Cutting Devices, Bits, Saws and Drills feature and two to the Fastening, Fixing and Adhesive feature. Peter has written two reviews for Draper Tools on a recip saw and a bench drill, and also a Cordless Mitre Saw from Metabo. He has tested two adhesives, Clear Fix from Everbuild and Epoxy Sticks from Delta Adhesives. There is also a feature on Computers and Software with an accompanying Voice of The Industry article giving advice to builders on the benefits of upgrading their technology. In spite of a sprinkling of snow this morning it is beginning to show early signs of spring here in West Sussex with cyclamen

and snowdrops out and daffodils nearly there. All adds to the air of optimism as we approach the end of winter. While we wait, now is the time to stay in the warm and enjoy reading this edition of ToolBUSINESS+HIRE magazine!
