ADVERTORIAL The Skateland Series Olga Jaff ae, an adult skater and author of the Skateland series, blends the world of fi gure skating with magic. Her

knowledge of the sport helps her to provide accurate descriptions of skating technique. The realm of fantasy adds fun and excitement to the story. The main characters are two aspiring skaters who train in Skateland, a magical place where people skate every-

where instead of walking, where stores sell skating-related items and every resident has a skating background. The series follows the careers of Cammie and Alex, fi rst as beginner athletes, who struggle with basic skating moves, and later as senior skaters, who compete at the Olympics. It’s not unusual for young athletes to crumble under the daily pressure of a heavy athletic regimen. On top of

that, Skateland athletes also have to battle evil spirits and witches. Skating witches are former athletes who were unsuccessful in their sport. Instead of going on with their lives, they became obsessed with ruining the careers of other skaters. The witches’ names, Pride, Injury, Fear, Destruction, Cheating, etc. are allegoric representations of the challenges that every athlete has to face. The chief message of the series is that pure, unadulterated love for what you do will make you happier than any medal or monetary gift. The Skateland series is recommended for any skater, regardless of age and level.

SKATING 41

It is an Olympic year and all skaters are worried about their

future in the sport. So when a mysterious woman offers the girls a deal that will guarantee them immediate success, they are all fascinated with the idea. Will Cammie accept the deal or lose hope of ever making it to the top? Won’t the consequences be too dangerous? And will Alex, who has just befriended a newly crowned champion be there for her?

“Tis book is about overcoming obstacles and the commitment it takes to achieve your goals whether in skating or in life. Not every skater will be an Olympic champion, but if one works hard, keeps focused, and continuously strives to learn, it will enrich your life as well as your skating and you will be a champion.”
