S.T.A.R.S. 2015 CAMPAIGN TAKING SHAPE REGISTRATION GETS UNDER WAY ON MARCH 2

by MELISSA VRINER

Te 2015 edition of S.T.A.R.S. is about ready to launch, with full registration beginning March 2. S.T.A.R.S., which stands for Standardized Test-

ing of Athleticism to Recognize Skaters, is a fun com- bine (series of tests) in which athletes from develop- mental to elite levels can display their off-ice athletic performance skills. Te S.T.A.R.S. tests, focusing on agility, balance,

coordination, strength, power and flexibility, are de- signed to reflect the many demands put on skaters’ bodies as they execute edges, turns, spins, sustained strength moves and, of course, jumps on the ice. Te foundation of the program is to get developmental skaters ready to do more advanced on-ice technique, to help athletes evaluate their strengths and weakness- es, and to create balanced, injury-resistant bodies. To help achieve these objectives, an educational

workshop is presented at each of the combines. Tis year’s workshop will focus on the pieces of the puzzle that help young skaters excel. Te fun and interactive

team-based workshop will test athletes’ knowledge of how to train their bodies, teach them how to develop athletic skills to support excellent posture, powerful edges, great jump and spin technique, and include how to use their S.T.A.R.S. results to create efficient and effective training. Te workshop will also focus on how to be

aware of risk factors for overuse injuries and identify pitfalls in training too much or doing the wrong type of training for a particular time in the season. When to push and when to rest? Is pain ever an acceptable part of training? How does recovery (like sleep and nutrition) relate with keeping athletes healthy? Te workshop is open to all participating ath- letes, coaches and parents. For more information, exercise guides and how
