ST PAUL’S PLAN GOES AHEAD
The London Borough of Richmond has approved the reserved maters planning application for a new general teaching building at St Paul’s School, designed by Walters and Cohen. The architects won an invited competition to design the building at the Barnes-based school in south-west London. It will replace the current teaching accommodation provided by 1960s CLASP buildings, which are near the end of their lifespan. The building will comprise classrooms, ICT facilities, a library, dining hall, kitchen, administrative offices, a chapel, hall and social spaces, including a generous student space in the triple-height atrium.
NOTTINGHAM CAMPUS TAKES SHAPE
Construction is well underway at New College Notingham’s Basford Hall campus. The new building has been designed to provide a training experience which is as close to the real thing as possible. There are 15 workshops, each focused on a different trade and kited out to provide high-quality training. Some will be double height to enable the college to recreate real-world working environments in areas such as ceiling and roof work. The campus will be handed over to the college in July 2015, ready for the start of the new academic year in September.
Scotish universities expand student accommodation
Graham Construction has started work on the third phase of a £38 million project to provide new student accommodation at the University of Stirling. Demolition of AK Davison Hall is complete and in its place Graham will create the 251-bedroom Juniper Court. The building will be available for students arriving in September 2015. This stage of the development follows a similar design to that used on previous phases of the university’s accommodation redevelopment programme at Willow Court and Beech Court. Gary Holmes, regional director for
Graham Construction, said: “We have been involved in this project from the beginning and it’s fantastic to see the students benefiting from the new state-of-the-art accommodation. The creation of Juniper Court is the final part of this stage of development and the accommodation will give the students a fantastic environment to take the next step in their academic lives.” The company has also started work
ABOVE: Once completed, Juniper Court will provide 251 student bedrooms
on a £7.5 million project in Glasgow, creating new student accommodation for Glasgow School of Art. The project will transform the former office development Blythswood House into a 218-bedroom accommodation building, with rooms arranged in clusters of flats with communal kitchens and living room areas. Work began last June and is expected to be completed in time for autumn term 2015.
Biomass merger announced
confident that they have the ongoing support of commited specialists through every stage of the process, whether it be specifying and supplying the correct fuel for a particular boiler or ensuring that a boiler system is appropriately installed in the first place. “The quality of the wood fuel is crucial
Sustainable wood fuel suppliers LC Energy have bought Ecolyf, MCS- accredited suppliers of wood fuel boilers. The acquisition has enabled LC Energy to offer a biomass service covering the supply and installation process through to fuelling and boiler maintenance. It will also give the company – which supplies Heathrow Airport’s biomass energy centre and Center Parcs Woburn – the opportunity to expand its market in both the industrial and domestic sectors. “The beauty of our new integrated
service,” says Mark Lebus, managing director of LC Energy, “is that any issues with the operation of biomass boilers can be addressed and customers can feel
to the performance and reliability of the biomass boiler and there have been cases where some suppliers have not met these standards, leading to problems with boilers. Now that we are involved in the sourcing and maintenance of the boilers, as well as supplying the fuel, we can ensure a seamless, reliable service. “The priority is to provide complete and
fit-for-purpose biomass solutions with after-sales service and fuel supply. In the few months since the contract was signed, there has already been considerable success in the form of two 199kW installations, Birtley House Care Home and Tormead Independent School, as well as six domestic installations and a long enquiry list for service and maintenance contracts.”
