n a modern educational establishment the demands on theatre space are ever increasing.

No longer can the theatre be the place where there are four to six performing arts productions a year with the occasional assembly or meeting. Space utilisation is the buzz word and theatres need to not only be used as much as possible, they must also have the ability to be able to quickly change from one type of use to another. Theatre consultant Drama by Design

has been working on theatre design in the education sector for many years with an eye not only on flexibility, but also on safety, ease of use and speed of

professionally equipped theatre. The theatre is designed to be flexible and combines retractable seating with loose seating and custom seating for the balcony which can be angled towards different stage layouts or completely removed. The stalls seating can be retracted and then a motorised curtain encircles the stalls area to create a self-contained drama studio. The whole auditorium is covered

by a tension wire grid allowing safe, easy access to all the stage lighting equipment that is rigged above it, enabling the students to get involved with the technical side of productions. Above the stage a motorised flying

Changing Places sets standard for school hygiene rooms

Architectural designers and contractors are being given a new solution to the specification and installation of accessible hygiene facilities in schools. New Department for

Education guidance (Building Bulletin 93) sets out a minimum space requirement for hygiene rooms, but there are no specific guidelines for equipment. Clos-o-Mat, Britain’s leading supplier of hygiene rooms and Changing Places assisted accessible toilets, is delivering a solution - a ‘pick ‘n’ mix’ service that encompasses design advice, supply, installation and maintenance. “As more mainstream schools accommodate pupils with

SEN, there is growing demand for hygiene rooms - but confusion over what exactly is needed,” says Kelvin Grimes, Clos-o-Mat’s hygiene rooms & Changing Places project manager. “We have completed so many successful projects that we know the most practical options for each client’s budget. We can apply our knowledge of the specific needs of children, who may require a raft of considerations from toilet and washbasin height to toilet support systems.” To assist all involved in the process, Clos-o-Mat has

published white papers addressing accessible school toilet provision which can be accessed via the company’s website.

system allows for lighting equipment, curtains and scenery to be raised and lowered as required. This is controlled from a computerised control system which allows cues to be programmed as part of the show, and features overload and slack load detection, so if a bar should snag, it will automatically stop. The audio visual system is controlled

from touch panels that enable it to be instantly re-configured without the need for complicated re-configuration. Even if the drama department has set up the system for a theatrical production in the evening, the principal can hit one buton and the system will automatically be re- configured for a PowerPoint presentation. As the space is likely to be utilised for

long periods of time, LED stage lighting was selected. This uses less electricity, generates less heat, doesn’t need expensive lamp replacement and doesn’t require colour filters to be inserted to project a different coloured light - colour is selected from the lighting console.
