Advanced surgical energy devices set to become indispensable


Surgical energy devices that use heat to cut and coagulate tissue are already perceived to have great value. According to a recent report, UK surgeons believe their value is ever-increasing and advanced surgical energy will become paramount in future. Ceri Roberts, report author, states that the benefits of these devices for surgeons, patients and health services as a whole are multiple as they minimise blood loss, are safe and easy to use and improve patient outcomes. Importantly though, she highlights that they can save time and money.

he recent report, ‘The Value of Advanced Surgical Energy’, indicates that using


surgical energy devices makes surgery easier, safer, more efficient, and minimises the risk of complications, providing the best outcome for patients.1


Surgeons surveyed as part of research for the report said advanced surgical energy devices “are more precise, effective and safe.”1


The report also says that 59% of surgeons said such devices reduce operating time, 57% said they enable them to carry out complex procedures safely and with precision and nearly a third (30%) commented that the devices give them more confidence.1


Indeed, nine out of 10 surgeons surveyed (88%) believe that advanced surgical energy will become more important in the development of techniques they carry out and will “enable operations that previously could not have been done with minimal access techniques”.1


Faster surgeries performed with increased ease are of clear benefit to patients as well as surgeons, and responses from surgeons indicate that patients experience better outcomes, with less pain and faster recovery times when these

devices are used. A third of surgeons (33%) say that these devices have improved the way that surgical procedures are carried out by providing better overall outcomes for patients, improved patient recovery time (21%), a reduction in the size and number of incisions required (18%) and less patient postoperative pain (14%).1


It is evident that surgical energy devices such as THUNDERBEAT are a safe alternative for cutting, coagulation and tissue dissection during surgery and are improving the way that surgeries are carried out as well as improving patient outcomes and recovery.2, 3


Given the many potential benefits associated with the use of advanced surgical energy devices — reduced operating time, increased productivity, shorter recovery times, fewer hospital bed days, reduced postoperative medications and reduced need for secondary surgeries — it’s clear that these devices can, and do, offer real financial benefits, and surgeons already recognise that this is the case.1


It has been projected that a reduction in length of stay of between two and six days per patient could save NHS trusts £15.5–£46.5m a year in total.4


As such, a key financial consideration for ongoing spending reviews is the potential value


return through investing in advanced surgical energy devices.1


At a time when the pressure


to reduce NHS spending has never been so intense, devices such as THUNDERBEAT represent great value and should be considered. As one surgeon explains, “managers should realise that health economics would benefit in the long run”.
