Intelligent data is the key to cancer care
Jonathan Mills from Evoluu describes how a niche yet comprehensive management system can support an effective cancer service and cover all pathways, from tumour therapy to palliative care.
E
ven before the recent announcements from Westminster, cancer has been rapidly
becoming a priority for health services, the government and patients. While the evidence shows that cancer survival rates are increasing, the burden of cancer and the demand for treatment is escalating simultaneously, and it’s becoming more and more apparent how radically cancer services will need to develop to keep pace.
If services are going to be able to deliver above and beyond the current KPIs to meet these ever more demanding targets – from referral and results waiting times to a paperless NHS by 2018 – cancer organisations and clinical teams will need support from robust and specialist software to manage the expansion in information about patients and treatment that will follow.
These systems will need to be carefully tailored to focus on three key aspects: a) capturing multi-disciplinary information
across all cancer care specialities. It is the first specialist system of its kind, because it goes beyond just gathering data into a static dataset by providing real-time information back to the users in a meaningful way via both browser and mobile platforms.
The CancerPlan product is available in different configurations for the most common tumour types, including breast, colorectal, bowel and lung, and can easily be adapted to the particular needs of any specialist department or care pathway – including palliative care.
Intuitive data collection from initial
diagnosis right through to treatment and follow-up in an intuitive manner; b) providing clinicians and managers with instant access to patient dashboards and analytics at multiple levels of granularity in order to make better informed medical decisions; and c) measuring impact on patients’ experiences and outcomes as well as adherence to NHS guidelines to ensure progress can be monitored and best- practice is followed.

The solution collects data related specifically to the delivery of cancer care, including assessments, follow-ups, results and requests, as well as integrating with existing hospital systems, like PAS, electronic patient records and imaging to reduce manual intervention and create a single flow of information along entire pathways.
CancerPlan’s instant overview provides consultants and clinicians with an all- encompassing view of the patient, with no manual input required. The solution is supported by highly customisable user-centric dashboards that provide real-time and up- to-date information regarding performance against KPIs as well as instant information to assist in care delivery to support decision making and improve patient outcomes.
The system’s automatic reporting capability ensures un-intrusive collection of National Audits such as COSD and NHSBSP. Quick access to such reports is proven to support practice and improve information regarding service delivery. The system also automatically creates letters for GPs and healthcare workers based entirely on data collected at the point of care.
Trusted capability
Feedback from clinicians indicate that a solution like CancerPlan “brings data collection and management into the 21st century” by enabling user-friendly, real-time data collection on cancer patients. By linking treatment variables to outcome, accurate information on patient and surgeon outcomes will be available at the touch of a button. The benefits of having an efficient management solution include improved recruitment to clinical trials, generation of clinic letters, administration of MDTs, requesting investigations, improved research opportunities, and patient access to information – which will inevitably lead to better care for cancer patients.
Moving forward
CancerPlan supports all existing target definitions and is configurable to adapt to any future revisions or improvements; the solution is breaking new ground to make the tools which are needed available today.
