news SKZ installs Buss kneader


The SKZ plastics research and training centre in Würzburg, Germany has added a Buss MX 30 laboratory kneader to its portfolio of plastics processing machinery. The oscillating single-screw kneader was commissioned in September, making SKZ the first institution in Germany to have a Buss laboratory kneader with four-flight technology. The machine is capable of


producing plastics compounds containing particularly shear- and heat-sensitive materials. Dr Peter Heidemeyer, managing director R&D at SKZ, said that the MX 30 comple- ments the institute’s existing compounding and extrusion machinery which includes various co-rotating twin-screw extruders, a planetary roller extruder, a continuous kneading mixer and a 12-screw co-rotating extruder. “What makes this kneader so useful is its uniform shear rate and a slow temperature rise in the processing section which ensure extremely gentle processing,” explained Dr Heidemeyer. “And thanks to the high free volume, we can incorporate large quantities of additives, such as halogen-free

flame retardants, conductive and other specially structured grades of carbon black, as well as other functional substanc- es, uniformly distributed into the polymer matrix.” Dr Andreas Kunzmann, managing director of Buss, emphasised the close cooperation with SKZ: “One major reason behind our decision to provide this laboratory kneader is SKZ’s very practical focus. Most of the projects SKZ handles are driven by industry, predomi- nantly by medium-sized companies”. He added that


shipping test materials within the EU cuts out a lot of the red tape involved in using Buss’s own pilot plant in Switzerland. The MX30 laboratory kneader supplied to SKZ is suitable for product volumes of 300 g upwards and is designed for throughputs of 5 to 25 kg/h. It is equipped with three feed hoppers and a discharge extruder with downstream pelletizing. Songwon and its distributor United Trading System (UTS) have signed an agree- ment to supply the Russian petrochemical company Sibur with additives used in polypropylene, polyethyl- ene, rubbers, thermoplastic rubbers and PVC. Under the deal, Songwon will also provide Sibur with technical support for stabilizers in end-use applications. The agreement will be


effective until the end of 2015 and was signed by Dieter Morath, executive vice president of Songwon International, Lars Hjorth, managing director of UTS Scandinavia and Sibur’s director for chemicals procurement Kirill Maksimov.


As part of the coopera- tion, Songwon and Sibur say that they will also develop and implement joint projects aimed at improving the properties of polymers. ❙ www.sibur.comwww.songwon.com


Metabolix sells bioplastics compounds business Akro-Plastic, the German


compounder, is to acquire the Mvera portfolio of biodegrad- able and compostable com- pounds from Metabolix, the US supplier of PHA bioplastics. The product range will now be marketed and further

developed by Akro-Plastic’s Bio-Fed division, which is located on the BioCampus Cologne in Germany. The agreement ensures security of supply for customers, and all required technologies and IP are being transferred to
