Chatter COMMUNITY RE: THE FACE YOU MAKE WHEN YOU HOOK THE BIG ONE

Comin’ tight! When Gary Robinson posted this photo on Kayak Angler’s Facebook page, our friends took some pot shots. Here are a couple low blows:

“Fish face!” –Ben Carvosso “That shot says, ‘Don’t come off!’”—Martin Bold

Lessons Lost The “2014 Skills Guide” in the Summer/Fall issue of Kayak Angler (www.rapidmedia.com/0309) covered 69 tips, tricks and tactics to improve fishing, paddling and life, but according to our readers, we missed some basic lessons. “No one mentioned the most obvious skill,” complains John Snyder on Kayak Angler’s Face- book page, “you have to learn how to pee from a kay- ak.” We’re glad John doesn’t offer detailed instructions. Reformed bass-boater, Mike Reinhold shares

lessons on tackle management. “I learned to be very species and trip specific,” he explains, “I cut my tackle down to four rods and one Plano box.” Shane McCurdy, Dave Nacrelli

and Scott Schrader

offer rigging advice. “Learn to be prepared while be- ing minimalist and keeping things in reach,” Shane writes. Dave backs him up, “Be sure gear is secure yet accessible and out of the way,” he suggests. Scott adds, “Keep your go-to lures in reach at all times.” One of the most important lessons comes from Kris

Lozier. “Learn the limit of your abilities,” she insists, “don’t bite off more than you can chew.” Some

readers offered philosophical lessons.

Theresa Southerland encourages anglers to, “Slow down and make the most of what you have.” Kyle Polk thinks the skills guide should have included relationship advice: “Find a significant other who will allow you to enjoy your kayak fishing passion,” he advises. According to Steve Shane, kayak fishing doesn’t

require any skill. “The first time out I was hooked,” he says, “kayak fishing is a sport for people who want to try something different, exciting and healthy.” But Morgan Blake sums it up best, “The skills you need for kayak fishing are a journey, not a destination.”

8…KAYAK ANGLER

Dream Catch “It’s funny how we dream about things that are

most distant to us,” writes Joel Abrahamsson in the Summer/Fall issue of Kayak Angler. Joel’s story, “Swedish Fish,” had reader’s day dreaming on Kayak Angler’s Facebook page. Friend Billy Moore imagines television fame, “I would follow Jim Sammons (Kayak Fishing Show) with two destinations like halibut in Alaska and tarpon in Florida.” Pro kayak guide Randy Vining also fishes via

boob-tube, “Flip Pallot (The Walker Cay Chronicles) and tarpon in the keys,” he writes in an email, “if I have to explain you wouldn’t understand.” New England guide Tim Moore dreams of fishing

with Abrahamsson. “Joel’s passion for catching big fish from the kayak has been an inspiriation,” he says. Scott Vaughn likes to dream of distant destinations.

“I’d love to catch a tiger fish on fly deep in the African jungle.” Gregory Lee dreams of time travel, “Any fish in any lake with my dad would be a dream,” he posted, “RIP, Dad!” Kayak Angler contributor, Chris Funk spends a lot

of time with his head in the clouds, “Every corner of the earth has a species I dream of catching,” he admits. Jackson Kayak pro Drew Gregory shared his version of a dream: “A beautiful brunette with brown eyes that’s also smart, witty, loves to be active and outdoors.” Now that’s a dream every kayak angler has dreamed. Get the story behind Abrahamsson’s 1,200-pound kayak catch on page 26.
