Five years ago, Wilderness Systems pro Jeff Little made a splash on the kayak- fishing scene with his collection of instructional videos and action films. After four DVDs, dozens of online videos and thousands of hits on his YouTube and Pivotshare channels, Little has taught countless anglers to catch more fish. And he’s learned how to make a buck, too. While Jeff hasn’t quit his day job, the income he generates from his hard work

is enough to keep him in fishing gear and filming equipment. “I’m not getting rich,” he laughs, “but it didn’t hurt so bad when I dropped my $2,400 video camera overboard.” Little’s business model relies heavily on word of mouth. “My first films were

very simple,” he admits, “but they did the job of teaching people to fish better.” Now Little employs better editing, sound, illustrations and high-quality video, but educating and entertaining the viewer is still the focus. Little has used all the powers of the Internet to publish and market his films.

By combining social media, video channels, DVDs, Blue Ridge Kayak Fishing’s website and his Confidence Baits e-store, Little has become a kayak fishing media mogul. Recently, Little started using Pivotshare to provide access to his library of

videos. Users pay a couple bucks per video or contribute a small subscription fee for unlimited access to the collection of 76 videos. “Pivotshare monetized my content,” he says, “YouTube didn’t do that as well.” While the cost-per-view is low, the money adds up. “I’ve already exceeded my expectations,” he says, “and I can cover the cost of producing more content.” For Little, making a buck with kayak fishing videos comes down to supply

and demand. “If you create content that teaches someone to catch more fish your viewers will do your marketing for you.”

CUTTING ROOM “I use a Macintosh and Final Cut Pro software. When I bought my first camera, I enrolled in an editing class at the Apple store. For $99 I was able to take an hour-long class each week. That is the best investment I’ve made,” says Little. Keep up with Jeff Little at tightlinejunkiejournal.pivotshare.com, www.blueridgekayakfishing.com and www.confidencebaits.net.
