[D E STI NATION] PANAMA’S AZUERO

PENINSULA WHERE THE SEA IS AS WILD AS THE JUNGLE PHOTOS AND WORDS BY JASON ARNOLD

J

ungle-covered landscapes and mammoth-sized fish lure thrill-seeking anglers to Panama’s Azuero Peninsula. Panama is a thriving, modern country, but visiting the Azuero Peninsula is a trip back to the Jurassic period. Lush tropical foliage covers steep mountains that rise straight out of the cobalt ocean providing a stunning backdrop for an epic fishing trip that is sure to be the adventure of a lifetime. Whether you stay in the modern Pedasi fishing lodge or venture to the rustic Azuero outpost, it is possible to catch dogtooth snapper, roosterfish, grouper, yellowfin tuna, wahoo, marlin, sailfish and more just a short distance from the beach.

Get Away and Stay Connected

A flight to Panama City and a five-hour ride through the jungle will get you to Pedasi, a small fishing village and tourist and retirement destination with excellent beaches, great dining and world-class surfing and diving. Casual travelers and avid anglers looking to get away without leaving

the comforts of home will enjoy Panafishing

Adventure’s comfortable fishing lodge with air-conditioning, WiFi and a pool. While in Pedasi, fishing is as easy as launching at the

local marina and paddling out into open water. Anglers can slow troll live baits or cast large popping plugs around rocks and ledges to score roosterfish and cubera snapper.

Really Wild Coast

Fishing out of Pedasi is an adventure, but anglers look- ing for a truly epic experience will want to continue to the southern tip of Azuero Peninsula and fish the Wild Coast. This pristine fishing location is so remote there isn’t a road for over 40 miles. Reaching the fish camp from Pedasi requires a bumpy truck ride followed by a bumpy boat ride. Accommodations are rustic and comfortable, consisting of tents, air mattresses and sleeping bags. Howler monkeys serve as an alarm clock and meals are supplemented with local fruits and the day’s catch. Launch the kayaks from the beach in camp and start fishing right away. Fishing is as challenging as it is rewarding. Spend the day trolling live baits or casting plugs for jacks, snapper and yellowfin tuna. Paddling miles and fighting apex predators takes strong muscles and plenty of stamina. Professional guides in modern pangas provide a safety net. At the end of the day, refuel your motor with the day’s catch while sitting around a campfire and sharing wild and true fish stories. Then crawl into a tent and collapse under clear skies filled with millions of stars. Drift off to sleep dreaming fishing dreams that will come true on Panama’s Wild Coast.
