EASY ACCESS Troy Meyerhoeffer

The park is only open to kayaks and boaters from April 1 to November 30. Get a fishing permit at the park office. The park is 45 minutes to an hour from my house, depending on traffic. It’s best to fish the lakes on a weekday; weekends are really crowded.

TARGET SPECIES

Largemouth and smallmouth bass, pickerel, trout and tiger musky. Each of the park’s lakes fish differ- ently depending on the water temperature. In spring I like to fish shallow in the morning and hit the weeds during the hottest part of the day. During summer, I focus on deep, rocky bottom and islands. Weed beds near spring-fed creeks will also hold bass. Late in the season, I throw topwater poppers to wake up the fish.

I find fish feeding on bait and intercept with a topwater lure.

TACKLE BOX

Baitcasting combo with a stiff backbone and sturdy reel spooled with 60-pound braided line to fish the weed beds. Frogs and spinner baits are perfect for luring big bass out of the vegetation. Soft plastic creature baits are hard for the fish to resist. Jigs work great in deeper holes.

Let me tell you about a 100 bass day. I hit my favorite fishing hole early one morning. Every time my frog lure hit the water, I would catch a bass. Most of the fish were one to two pounds, but there were some three- and four-pounders thrown in. I had no idea there were so many bass in the little water hole. At one point the line broke and the lure went flying through the air. I was worried that a bass would eat the frog before I could paddle over and rescue it. I fished from 5 a.m. until well after dark and counted over 100 bass.
