Updated book is must-read
By Craig Sesker “The History of Collegiate Wrestling” is
quite simply a book every wrestling fan must have in its collection. From legends Dan Gable and Dan
Hodge to four-time NCAA champions Pat Smith, Cael Sanderson and Kyle Dake, this book is a complete, comprehensive and riveting encyclopedia that documents the entire history of college wrestling. The book, originally compiled by the
late wrestling historian Jay Hammond, has now been updated with excellent new features that were compiled by top wrestling author Jamie Moffatt. The National Wrestling Hall of Fame & Museum has just released an updated digital version of the book. The book couples detailed, historical
recaps of each collegiate season along with features and profiles of the numer- ous stars of the sport. You can read about how Washington’s
Larry Owings pulled off an improbable and stunning upset in stopping Iowa State’s Gable one win short of an unbeat- en college career. You can relive Sanderson’s phenome-
nal 159-0 career at Iowa State where he became and still remains the only wrestler to complete a four-year college career with an unbeaten record.
You can go back to that memorable
night when Dake became the only wrestler to win an unthinkable four NCAA titles in four different weight classes. You can follow the quest of Oklahoma
State’s Pat Smith on his way to become the NCAA’s first four-time champion. You can read about Oklahoma State’s dominance in the early days of the sport before it returned to glory from 2003-06. You can see how Iowa became a national powerhouse under Gable, whose teams won an amazing 15 NCAA titles and 21 Big Ten titles in his 21 seasons as the Hawkeye head coach. The updated version of the book includes features on Olympic and World champion Jordan Burroughs, Olympian and MMA star Ben Askren and Dake. The new version also chronicles the magical run by Penn State, where super- stars Ed Ruth and David Taylor led the Nittany Lion resurgence. Again, this is a book that no wrestling
fan should be without. It’s an easy, enjoy- able and entertaining read. The e-book sells for $14.99 on Amazon, iTunes, and Barnes & Noble. Proceeds from the book will help the non- profit National Wrestling Hall of Fame & Museum achieve its mission of preserving the history of the sport.
