EXECUTIVE NOTES By Rich Bender, USA Wrestling Executive Director
Advisory Committee to assist USA Wrestling in hosting the best World Cup and World Championships ever In 2013, the international wrestling community faced the
biggest challenge in our sport’s history. The International Olympic Committee recommended removing wrestling from the Olympic Games program, and the sport had less than one year to save its Olympic fate. If there is one thing that USA Wrestling and the entire wrestling community learned through that process was that reaching out to others and working together was absolutely nec- essary for the success of our efforts. The creation of the Committee for the Preservation of Olympic
Wrestling (CPOW) was a turning point in USA Wrestling taking a leadership role in the Keep Olympic Wrestling effort. We were able to bring together a wide variety of wrestling leaders, who worked as a team to tackle the task at hand. The 2015 year delivers a different opportunity to USA
Wrestling and the American wrestling family. We have an amaz- ing chance to showcase wrestling this year, and elevate its sta- tus on the Olympic level. In 2015, USA Wrestling will host two major international com- petitions, the World Wrestling Championships in Las Vegas, Nev., Sept. 7-12 and the Freestyle World Cup in Los Angeles, Calif., April 11-12. The goal within USA Wrestling for these events is simple - to host the greatest World Championships and World Cup ever held. In order to achieve this goal, USA Wrestling has formed an advisory committee of leaders that will get involved behind the efforts of our staff and volunteers. Included in this advisory com- mittee are many of the same leaders from CPOW. Once again, we have reached out for an all-star team to help our sport, this time to make the most of an amazing opportunity ahead of us. Make no mistake. It is very important for these events to be successful. As we also learned during the Olympic crisis, USA Wrestling has the ability to be a true leader within international wrestling. We are very proud of the efforts of our entire wrestling community which rallied behind the effort and helped the IOC
Tr
understand the importance of wrestling within the Olympics. Wrestling has been in a renaissance
since 2013. Hosting the World Championships in Las Vegas just one year prior to the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janiero, Brazil allows us to have our fingerprints on how wrestling is pre- sented to the world. Our success in Las Vegas and Los Angeles will give American wrestling a chance to help forge the future of our sport. . We will ask our Advisory Committee to get involved in many
ways. They will help us to promote the competitions, with the goal of selling out the arenas. They will give input on the best way to present the sport, making it as exciting as possible. They will provide support on promoting the event to the media and the general public. They will help us find the private and corpo- rate support necessary to fund the necessary areas for success. These two events provide two opportunities for success. The committee will also work on other matters within the sport that can raise the relevancy of wrestling in the USA and the world. Just like during the Olympic challenge in 2013, we will not attempt to do this alone. We will be reaching out to the wrestling community on all levels to become part of our team. Just like we learned we needed high level leadership to save Olympic wrestling, we also learned that we needed support and involve- ment of all American wrestlers to elevate our game. What can you do to make Las Vegas and Los Angeles the
best events ever held? Of course, if you can be there in person to support Team USA, it will help us create the atmosphere needed for success. I can guarantee you that a large and vocal fan base for our American wrestlers will make a big difference in their performance. History has shown just how powerful a home-field advantage can be in international wrestling. Even if you can’t come in person, please participate in the process. Let your friends and family know about these events. Follow the USA team on
TheMat.com, through social media and on the broadcasts of our events. Become a fan of American wrestling. Help us build a buzz for our team and our sport.
Train your body inside and out!
