seen come through his room in recent years, he insists Lee has the potential to be one of the greatest. “Spencer is so mature for his age,” said Strittmatter, an NCAA runner-up for Iowa. “He is so intellectual. You teach him some- thing and he picks it up so quickly. I’ve never seen a wrestler pick up technique like he does. Off the mat, he is a very good kid, mature kid and intelligent kid, and then on the mat that car- ries over.”
“He is very hard on himself. He loves to challenge himself. If he doesn’t have a good practice, no one has to yell at him. I think that’s what makes him so special. He just sets such a high standard for himself and he doesn’t let himself come under that no matter what.”
Moving forward, Lee hopes to become the second Olympian in his family, joining his mother, Cathy, who competed at the 1992 Olympics for the U.S. in judo. But Lee also understands he has a long road to get there and just hopes to give it his all and his goals will come where they may.
This season, Lee will only be a sophomore in high school and is looking to continue his growth on the mat. Should he win state title number two, he will be halfway to becoming only the sixth wrestler in Pennsylvania history to win four state titles.
“I want there to be no regrets,” Lee said. “Whether it is win- ning the Olympics or not, even though that is obviously every- one’s goal, to be a state champ, national champ, world champ and Olympic champ. I want to win those. “It was the best feeling winning my first World title. I want to feel that again every year, but maybe that doesn’t always hap- pen. I just want to look back on it and know I did the best I could do.”
