n ALCATRAZ: ‘The Rock’ is one of San Francisco’s top draws. From the mid-1930s until the mid-1960s, Alcatraz was America’s premier maximum- security prison and held infamous criminals such as Chicago crime boss Al Capone and Harlem mafioso ‘Bumpy’ Johnson. The audio tour is always popular, so make sure you book a few weeks in advance of your visit.
n MH DE YOUNG MEMORIAL MUSEUM: This building features a cornucopia of fine art from the US and beyond. Exhibitions are eclectic — you can expect to see anything from theatrical retrospectives of fashion designers to collections of oceanic masks.
n GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE: Synonymous with the city, the Golden Gate is one of the world’s
most elegant suspension bridges. It can be appreciated from a number of vantage points, with arguably the finest views from Vista Point in Marin on the north side and from below at Fort Point.
n CITY HALL: Some highly significant events have taken place in and around this impressive building, including protests against anti-communist senator Joe
McCarthy and the assassination of openly gay politician Harvey Milk in 1978.
n BEAT MUSEUM: This fascinating museum-cum-shop- cum-treasure-trove holds various treats such as the banned edition of poet Allen Ginsberg’s seminal Howl and a cheque made out to a liquor store by novelist Jack Kerouac in 1961.
