YOUNG CATTLE RAISERS

Join the Museum that Showcases Your Ranching Heritage By Deanna Holderith, Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Foundation membership director

A

MERICAN EXPRESS FAMOUSLY PROCLAIMED, “MEMBERSHIP has its privileges.” The same holds true for The Cattle Raisers Museum.

In addition to tangible benefi ts such as free admis-

sion to the museum and the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo, museum membership offers intangible benefi ts that are arguably more important. Your membership dollars allow us to educate people of all ages about ranching history and our industry’s stewardship ethic. Last year, more than 400,000 guests from all around

the world visited the museum. In addition, we reached 75,000 students through fi eld trips. During the 2013-14 school year, our educator traveled to 48 schools and gave 197 presentations that reached almost 6,200 children. The museum was established in 1980. It

was one of the fi rst projects un- dertaken by the

Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Foundation because it was a logical, effective way to achieve the goal of preserving and protecting the heritage of the livestock industry of the Southwest through educa- tion. We were originally located on West 7th Street in Fort Worth, but outgrew that space when we entered the 21st Century. In November 2009, we moved to our current location within the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History. The move made perfect sense because the cattle

industry is an applied life science with a strong eco- logical component. It is also a fundamental part of the history of Texas and the Southwest. Ranching fueled this region’s economic engine early on, and created the legacy of strong, risk-taking individualism that continues to defi ne our area today. Despite the huge imprint ranching has made

on Texas and the Southwest, the general public is losing touch with our rural way of life. I’m always amazed at the comments made by the people who visit the museum. One of our exhibits show- cases all of the products that come from cattle. Invariably, the visitors say, “Wow! I thought they only gave milk.” Frankly, I’m not sure that many of them had made the connection between cattle and beef. With that said, the world is changing

and we’re changing with it. Foundation and museum staff members are in the planning stages of a complete museum redesign. While the plans are far from fi nalized, we are excited. Your member- ship helps make this – and all of our other programs – a reality. We can’t showcase

the industry’s proud heritage and respon- sible stewardship without you.
