Four individuals who have been catalysts for the beef industry and inspired others to do the same were honored July 29 during the sixth annual Cattle
Feeders Hall of Fame banquet in Westminster, Colo. Roy Dinsdale and J. R. “Jack” Simplot were inducted into the Cattle Feeders Hall of Fame. Betty Jo Gigot was presented with the Industry Leadership Award, and Brad Thomas was recognized with the Arturo Armendariz Distinguished Service Award, which recognizes exceptional feedyard employees. Emily Meredith has been promoted to vice president of communications and membership for the Animal Agriculture Alliance. Feedstuffs broadcast editor Andy Vance is the fi rst program mentor for the College Aggies Online Scholarship Program, an Animal Agriculture Al-
liance program. Vance will provide students with practical advice on social media best practices, journalistic ethics, and the best way to communicate with consumers about agriculture topics. USDA Farm Service Agency Administrator Juan Garcia has retired from his position. U.S. Secretary
of Agriculture Tom Vilsack says, “Juan’s hard work and sound leadership have helped to create new op- portunities and achieve record results for America’s farmers and ranchers, including the 2014 Farm Bill di- saster assistance programs that have provided relief to thousands of producers as they rebuild in the face of natural disasters. Juan’s work will live on through, among other things, the signature microloan program, which debuted in 2013 and today has provided more than $150 million in credit through more than 8,000 loans to small farmers and ranchers.” Dee Likes, CEO and executive vice president of the Kansas Livestock Association is stepping aside
after 31 years in the position. Likes will assume the title of KLA chief executive emeritus on Dec. 31, and will remain employed by KLA in an advisory role.
BEREAVEMENTS
W.C. (Bert) Schneider, 91, passed away Aug. 1, 2014, in Abilene. He was born May 28, 1923, in Kempner to Alfred and Sara (Leschber) Schneider. The fam-
ily later moved to Albany. He attended school at Trinity Lutheran Church while continuing to help with the family farm. Bert served in the U.S. Army from May 5, 1943, to Feb. 20, 1946, as a March-
ing Gunner. He served in the South Pacifi c Islands, New Caledonia, Fiji, Bou- gainville, Philippines, Leyte, Samoa, and Cebu. Bert was wounded in Cebu and received a Purple Heart, Combat Infantry Badge and other citations. In 1949, Bert married Renata (Boettcher) Schneider. He is survived by his daughters, Phyllis Baum, Gail Batko, and Lynn Roeder,
all of Abilene, and numerous other relatives. Memorials may be made to Our Savior Lutheran Church, The Lutheran Hour, or to your favorite charity.

Woolfolk will provide consultation and farm visit ser- vices to members, while also in- creasing the Beefmaster breed’s exposure in the commercial mar- ketplace. His responsibilities will include providing classifi cation services, managing commercial marketing programs and support- ing BBU educational programs that create visibility and demand for Beefmaster cattle.
