Reata Park And Event Center REATA ROAD AND ORTEGA HIGHWAY San Juan Capistrano’s newest park is an oasis of native plants. Located in the city’s eastern ter- ritory nearby the developing Rancho Mission Viejo community, the Reata Park and Event Center features more than 2,000 native plants, made up of around 240 different species. Te 12-acre park also features ample recreational space, an equestrian staging area, space for weddings and group events, a network of paths and trails and a restored historic home that serves as a welcome center. Te park was built and funded by the nonprofit San Juan

Capistrano Open Space Foundation. Volun- teers spent nearly every weekend over a year to build fences and benches, plant trees and flowers and clear paths. Te land is part of 132 acres of open space, including the adjacent Rancho Mission Viejo Riding Park, that the city purchased in 2010 for $27.5 million, using a $30 million voter-approved bond. Te park’s native plants, including its arboretum, were supplied by San Juan Capistrano-based Tree of Life Nursery. Owner Mike Evans called the park the first and only large native plant park in Southern California.
