WELCOME FROM THE MAYOR Preserving the Past to Enhance the Future San Juan Capistrano is unique and a rarity in California.
It’s a community whose foundation was laid by the earliest people to inhabit the land and a city still evolving aſter more than 230 years. Te city, which celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2011, is a community that echoes its motto of “Preserving the Past to Enhance the Future.” Tis diverse community is home to vast open space and
protected ridgelines, pristine parks and neighborhoods and a historic downtown that sets it apart from any other. San Juan Capistrano is a vibrant city with strong ties to the past as well as a vision of the future. Over this past year, our city’s financial health has contin-
ued to improve. Tis fact is evident by a 2.7 percent jump in retail sales, a 1.2 percent increase in transient occupancy tax from the city’s hotels and an increase in the city’s as- sessed valuation of 3.53 percent during 2013. Businesses continue to open in our town. Trough the Chamber of Commerce, we celebrated more than 30 ribbon cuttings in the past year. Te city adopted its new two-year balanced budget this
past year. General Fund revenues (excluding one-time revenues) are projected to increase by 2 percent in the first year and another 4 percent in the second.
In the city’s eastern open space,
the new Reata Park and Event Center opened to the public. Te park features picnic and event areas, walkways, access to a multi-trail system and an equestrian staging area. Te 18.4-acre park is part of the 132-acre acquisition from our voter-approved 2008 open space bond effort. San Juan Capistrano is also on the
cutting edge of technology with social media and a new mo- bile app to ensure residents and visitors alike have immedi- ate access to information on local events, restaurants, hotels, businesses, parks, trails, news and much more. Te city is also home to a Tesla supercharger and an electric vehicle charging station. Te Historic Downtown Master Plan is in motion with
a streetscape beautification project in the downtown. With other projects to enhance our community and historic downtown on the horizon, we will continue to work toward an even stronger and more vibrant San Juan Capistrano. I am proud and honored to be mayor of this great town. —Sam Allevato, Mayor, San Juan Capistrano
