FEI has announced the sale of a complete correlative workflow to the University of Maastricht, The Netherlands. The systems will be installed at the University’s Institute of Nanoscopy, a new research facility that will use the high-resolution microscopes to understand the working mechanisms of protein complexes in an effort to develop new and improved treatment and prevention for disease, such as cancer and tuberculosis. The complete workflow delivered to the university starts with live cell imaging using the CorrSight™ light microscope, which is designed specifically for use in correlative experiments and enables researchers to image live cell dynamics and, when a targeted event is observed, quickly fix those cells for electron microscopy. FEI’s MAPS™ software tracks the target position and coordinates and provides a common operating interface between the different tools across the entire workflow.

Biopharmaceutical strategic advisory company d3 Medicine LLC and virology service organization Viroclinics Biosciences BV have signed a nonexclusive Memorandum of Understanding to provide biopharmaceutical customers with an integrated solution to accelerate the preclinical and clinical development of drugs, biologicals, vaccines, and diagnostics targeting viral infectious diseases. Viroclinics Biosciences will provide a range of preclinical and clinical diagnostic services, including high-throughput serology, virology and molecular assays, phenotyping, and genotyping in both translational studies and phase I-IV clinical studies, and clinical trial logistics services. d3 Medicine will formulate integrated development, clinical pharmacology, and translational medicine strategies to fast-track preclinical development and define customized pharmacometric and quantitative pharmacological approaches to improve decision-making and accelerate clinical and regulatory development.

For outstanding scientific contributions to the 18th International Symposium on Bioluminescence and Chemiluminescence, the Marlene DeLuca award was presented to three scientists from Oman, Japan, and Sweden. The award was named in honor of Marlene DeLuca, who has pioneered the science of bioluminescence and chemiluminescence, one of her many contributions being the first cloning of the firefly luciferase gene. Berthold Technologies traditionally awards the prizes at the biennial meeting of the International Society for Bioluminescence and Chemiluminescence (ISBC).

Integrated DNA Technologies (IDT) has acquired the SURVEYOR® enzyme business of Transgenomic, Inc. The key component of SURVEYOR products is SURVEYOR Nuclease, a member of the CEL nuclease family of mismatch-specific
nucleases isolated from celery. SURVEYOR Nuclease has been shown to recognize and cleave mismatches arising from single nucleotide polymorphisms or small insertions or deletions.
