COMPLETING THE CIRCLE
Steve Lee is excited. After ten years at the helm of the Chartered Institution of Waste Management
(CIWM) as its CEO, Steve believes there has never been a more important time for the institution, its members and the wider industry. In this exclusive interview with Finning News, Steve gives us an insight into his view of the industry, the challenges it faces and the opportunities it presents.
Steve: “You know when you have cracked the importance of recycling when you have a conversation with a designer about how the materials in a new electric toothbrush can be reused. From the plastics to the metals and even the battery pack, an electric toothbrush is a challenging commodity to recycle, but it is clear that the industry is going in the right direction, if designers of these products are already thinking about the circular economy.
“We all know that the perfect vision for this industry is to help put an end to our throwaway society by delivering a more circular economy. This is where we reuse resources from products consumed in the UK to make new products, preferably here in UK/Irish industries.
