ALTERNATIVE ARRANGEMENTS

When German wood recycler Holzkontor Preussen GmbH was faced with a major breakdown of the static shredder at its Berlin recycling facility, an alternative solution was required to keep up supplies to a local power plant.

For Operations Manager Uwe Kulitzscher the challenge was to maintain the daily 500 plus tonnes of wood recyclates needed to fuel the power plant, whilst ensuring downtime was minimised and work could be carried out to fix the static unit.

After testing numerous machines that according to Uwe “Were not up to the task” a decision was made to use a combination of two Komptech Crambo Direct shredders in a two stage recycling process. The Crambo 5200 with a large screening basket is first used for pre-shredding and removing any metallic contraries from the waste wood. The Crambo 6200 then fine shreds the wood to the customer’s specification of 0 to 200mm chips.

This combination delivered a throughput of 40 tonnes per hour in marathon 13-hour days, matching the throughput performance of the static shredder. Uwe Kulitzscher explained, “Buffer Capacity is limited both here and at the power plant, so we need to continuously prepare and deliver wood chip for fuel.”
