Prysmian awarded Cyclades contract
The Prysmian Group has been awarded a contract worth approximately 95 million euro by IPTO (Independent Power Transmission Operator), the transmission system operator of the Greek electricity system, for the interconnection between the island of Syros (Cyclades) and the mainland power transmission system in Lavrion. The project will provide a
high-voltage alternating current (HVAC) cable system designed to transmit a power of 200 MVA and consisting of 150 kV extruded cables and associated fibre optic cable system along a route of more than 110 km for the interconnection between the two landfalls will enable the integration of Syros into the Greek network system and future expansion to the other Cyclades Islands (Paros, Mykonos, Tinos). ‘This new project confirms

BT has selected Ciena’s packet networking solutions to support the
evolution of its Openreach Ethernet services. Ciena says its family of packet switch modules
ensure fast Ethernet service delivery, agility and assurance for Openreach’s EAD services. Jon Hurry, MD for strategy, commercial,

Germany declares its digital intent
Germany’s government has voted to adopt a ‘digital agenda’ over the next three years, with the intention of developing the country into a worldwide leader in high-speed data. The ‘Digital Agenda 2014-2017’ bill states that

Broadband now leads the way in US TV viewing
Broadband TV subscribers have outnumbered cable television customers in the United States for the first time. A report from the Leicthman

USA now have 49.915 million broadband subscribers, compared to 49.91 million cable TV customers. The report says the largest
operator, Comcast, has 43 per cent of all US broadband

internet customers, with Time Warner claiming nearly 24 per cent of the market. Bruce Leichtman, principal
analyst for Leichtman Research Group, said: ‘With the addition of more than 30 million
broadband subscribers over the past decade, cable providers have clearly expanded well beyond their roots in cable TV service.’ When added to the internet provision from telephone
companies such as ST&T and Verizon, the United States’ broadband companies now boast nearly 90 million customers – an increase of nearly 400,000 in the second quarter of 2014.
