The European Conference on Optical Communications (ECOC 2014), being held from 21 to 25 September (exhibition from 22 to 24 September), is the largest conference on optical communication in Europe, Tim Gillett writes

Albis Optoelectronics is a designer, developer and manufacturer of high-speed photodiodes. For more than
ECOC 2014, which will be held at the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès, in the French city of Cannes, will be the 40th edition of the conference. Delegates will learn about the latest
advances in optical communication technologies. Leading-edge researchers will report their work through a carefully selected blend of keynote addresses, tutorials, invited papers – in addition to 400 contributed papers. The plenary session will be delivered by top industry executives and academic advisors. The technical symposia will feature
presentations on current research and development results in areas of submarine systems and interconnect in data centres. Another symposium will review some of the past key developments, but also explore some current telecom usage and future trends, in a special event to celebrate the 40th edition of ECOC. Seven tutorials, 42 invited papers and six
workshops will provide a forum to present and discuss the latest developments and results in optical communication devices, subsystems, transmission systems and networks.
At the end of the conference, the
post-deadline session will give attendees the opportunity to hear new and significant research in rapidly advancing areas at the earliest possible opportunity. As always, a major exhibition will be run
in parallel to ECOC 2014, covering a wide range of products and services in the field of optical communication. Companies from all over the world will exhibit their latest technologies at ECOC 2014, from materials and devices to systems and networks. Expect to meet analysts, media, government bodies, vendors and users – as well as established colleagues and customers. Te PQW series are high-speed microwave photodiode modules designed for direct optical-to- electrical conversion of RF-modulated optical signals. Te optical input is supplied through a single- or multimode fibre pigtail. Model PQW20A-L provides a typical bandwidth of 26 GHz. Te high performance Albis photodiode inside this unit is designed to operate in the wavelength region from 1260 to 1620 nm. Short wavelength model PQW30A-S comes with a multimode fibre and has a typical bandwidth of 33 GHz. Te Albis GaAs photodiode used is optimised for wavelengths from 800 to 860 nm.
