ravel to Mauritius is stress-free, with the national carrier Air Mauritius and British Airways both operating non-stop fl ights from London, with a fl ight time of around 12 hours. Air Mauritius also offers indirect fl ights via Paris.

T

Air Mauritius offers up to four fl ights a week from London and is the only direct carrier from LHR and the only direct carrier from Mauritius to LHR with overnight fl ights.

Thomson’s Dreamliner fl ies non-stop weekly from London Gatwick, while Emirates offers fl ights from Heathrow and Gatwick to Dubai, with daily onward fl ights to Mauritius on the Airbus A380. All international fl ights land at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport (SSR) on the southeast of the island and return economy fares start from approximately £770 pp. With a GMT +3/4-hour time difference, travel is usually jetlag-free.

While the island is small (17 X 25 sq miles, or 45 X 65 sq kilometres), journeys can be long, especially during the rush hour when the main north-south highway can be congested. Taxi transfers to the

island’s resorts take from 10 to 90 minutes (an average of 40 minutes). There is a public bus service on the island, and travel can be time-consuming, although Express buses are quicker and more reliable. It takes approximately one hour from Mahébourg to Curepipe, an hour from Curepipe to Port Louis and an hour from Port Louis to Grand Baie by bus. Self-drive is an easy and safe way to explore, with relatively good roads and driving on the left, as in the UK. International rental companies including Hertz, Avis, Sixt and Europcar operate in Mauritius, and all require a valid driver’s licence. Cycling is a good option for short hops along the coast and bicycles can be rented cheaply in most resorts.

Several Mauritius-based destination management companies offer island tours, transfers, car hire, wedding planning etc. including Emotions (emotionsdmc. com) and Mautourco (mautourco.com).
