Lying 2,000km off the southeast coast of Africa, the Republic of Mauritius, encompassing the islands of Mauritius, Rodrigues, Agaléga and Saint Brandon, is a year-round destination, with a peak season extending from October to April. Visited by Arab and Portuguese sailors, and a favourite haunt of pirates, it was uninhabited until the 16th century, which allowed the island’s incredible biodiversity to fl ourish.


Briefl y occupied by the Dutch and colonised by the French, who brought African slaves, the British took control in 1810, ruling until independence in 1968. The island’s visitors have all left their mark, from the French/African-derived Creole language, spoken alongside English, to dazzling colonial mansions and Asian spices that zing up the traditional cuisine.
