he fourth country in the world to have held a golf match, Mauritius has blossomed into a fi rst-class golfi ng destination in recent years. Golf was fi rst played in Scotland in 1778, followed by England and India, and Mauritius had its fi rst taste of the sport when it was introduced by the British Military in 1844, in the military base at Vacoas.

Today, the site is home to the oldest golf club in the southern hemisphere, the colonial-style Gymkhana Club. Opened in 1902, it offers one of the most affordable golfi ng opportunities on the island, with green fees of around £70.

The majority of courses in Mauritius are linked to luxury resorts – including the Heritage Golf Club, the world’s only fi ve-star all-inclusive resort – with many offering golfi ng packages or unlimited green fees for hotel residents. For non- residents, fees range from £50-150, including the use of a golf cart.

“Winning IAGTO’s Golf Destination of the Year (Africa, Indian Ocean and Gulf States) in 2008 helped to put Mauritius

on the global golfi ng map,” says Dr Karl Mootoosamy, Director of the MTPA. “Many resorts now offer world-class courses, with some having been designed by professional golfers, such as the Anahita, devised by former world number one player, Ernie Els, and Le Touessrok, designed by Masters Champion, Bernhard Langer.” Anahita The Resort Mauritius was also the course of choice for the AfrAsia Golf Masters in 2013, while the Constance Belle Mare Plage hosts the MCB PGA Open.

The island also has some excellent academies for adults and children, such as the Beachcomber Paradis Hotel & Golf Club (beachcombertours.
