ike many countries with a wealth of natural wonders, Mauritius is on a crusade to reduce its footprint and appeal to environmentally conscious visitors with its increasing number of green properties and pursuits. The island’s soaring volcanic peaks, ancient forests and unique fl ora and fauna are a magnet for dedicated eco-adventurers, as well as couples and families who simply want to spend some quality time in the great outdoors.


Mauritius has some beautiful protected wilderness areas which visitors to the island should be encouraged to explore. The largest, Black River Gorges National Park in the wild southwest of the island, boasting some 6,500 hectares of natural beauty, criss- crossed with walking and mountain biking trails, offering the chance to see waterfalls and spot the island’s native trees and rare birds.

Nature lovers will enjoy taking one of the daily boat trips and guided tours around the tiny, rocky wildlife sanctuary of Ile aux Aigrettes, off the south- east coast. Visits help to support the Mauritius Wildlife Foundation and the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust.

There’s lots to keep families entertained at La Vanille Réserve des Mascareignes, including an aquarium and the chance to see giant Aldabra tortoises, crocodiles, monkeys, and one of the world’s largest collections of butterfl ies and insects, while Casela Nature Park offers Segway Tours and the chance to walk with lions in the forest.

The island’s hotels are also adopting green practices, with

environmentally friendly activities such as composting, tree planting, recycling, carbon offsetting and energy and water-saving.
