F-Gas reassessment takes off

BUSINESS EDGE HAS been working closely with the CITB to introduce a F-Gas renewal scheme to meet the requirements of EC Reg 517 as well as matching the assessment criteria within EC Reg 303. To minimise disruption to technicians and their employers, operatives may undertake reassessment up to six months in advance of an existing certificate expiring, and upon successful completion will receive an MOT style certificate. For example, if a current certificate expires 01 July 2015, reassessment may be undertaken at any time between 02 January 2015 and 01 July 2015. If the reassessment were to be undertaken on 02 January 2015, then the new certificate would be valid until 01 July 2020 (Five years and six months).

To ensure that the proposed reassessment course was fit for purpose, the CITB ran a series of seminars – in conjunction with Business Edge – where the proposed course and assessment process was presented to representatives from all the CITB assessment centres across the country, along with representatives from Company Certification Bodies. The feedback from the seminars was very positive, resulting in just a few minor tweaks being required prior to the first pilot course being presented in May. Since then Business Edge have presented a

further five courses. Attendees have stated that the course has proven to be invaluable due to the major changes to the F-Gas Regulations.

The reassessment option has been designed and streamlined to focus specifically on the key legislation and practice changes since the last assessment and reassess key skills in accordance with the minimum requirements for certification programmes laid down in Regulations (EC) No 303/2008. This will typically be undertaken in two days, where the first day includes training on (EC) Regulation 517/2014 changes and counts towards Certificate of Professional Development (CPD), followed by a short theory assessment on the new changes. Day two focuses on a practical assessment which is based upon a typical workplace scenario using information provided on a F-Gas Work Record Sheet along with commissioning data and Ph Diagrams. The reassessment option is open to operatives that hold a current CITB expiring J11-J14 certificate and can be taken up to six months prior to the expiry date or within 12 months following expiry date.

After 12 months, an operative would be required to re-take the initial assessment. Operatives who carry out work activities that do not hold a current recognised

qualification will compromise their company certificate.

Companies who use sub-contractors must ensure that valid engineer qualifications are held before using them as either subcontract companies or subcontract personnel.

Reassessment is also open to operatives holding a valid City & Guilds 2079 certificate who may want to take advantage of additional CPD training to bring them up-to-date with current legislation. Business Edge will be running two free- to-attend F-Gas update seminars – one in Milton Keynes and one in Wakefield – looking at the changes in an easy-to- understand format and how it will effect technicians and contracting companies and their clients.

To provide further information, manufacturers Bitzer in Milton Keynes and Worcester, and Bosch Group in Wakefield will also be in attendance at these seminars, along with Refcom (one of the awarding bodies for Company F-Gas Certification) and a representative from CITB.
