Metalcasters Visit Capitol Hill Sen. Patrick Toomey (R-Pa., left) took a break from session in the Capitol

building to discuss OSHA’s proposed silica rule with Alan Brink, Spring City Electrical Manufacturing Co.

Tis June, metalcasters from around the country par- ticipated in the AFS Government Affairs Conference in Washington, D.C., to discuss the pressing legislative and regulatory issues facing the industry and take their message to Capitol Hill. Keynote speaker Tucker Carlson, a politi- cal news correspondent and commentator for the Fox News Channel, provided insights on the current state of Washing- ton politics and the upcoming 2014 midterm elections. U.S. metalcasters met with more than 100 congressional

offices from 20 states. In their Hill meetings, they discussed the following key issues and how they will impact the met- alcasting industry: • EPA’s power plant rule and waters of the U.S. proposal. • OSHA’s proposed crystalline silica rule. • Tax policy (R&D tax credit, bonus depreciation and op- position to LIFO repeal).

• Infrastructure: surface transportation reauthorization and water infrastructure.

• Foundry sustainability efforts. Metalcasters weighed in on how EPA’s approach to

greenhouse gas rules will damage the nation’s energy secu- rity by taking energy sources off the table. Tese rules would have a significant impact on metalcasters by raising energy prices and decreasing reliability. Te metalcasters also high- lighted their serious concerns with OSHA’s proposed silica rule and urged the agency conduct an adequate review of the data and put forth a technologically justifiable and economi- cally feasible rule. During the conference, AFS presented Rep. Chuck

Fleischmann (R-Tenn.) and Rep. Tim Walberg (R-Mich.) with the Metalcasting Industry Eagle Award. Tis award is presented annually to lawmakers who support Congressio- nal policies that enhance the ability of U.S. metalcasters to create jobs and innovate and who fight against burdensome and costly regulations that hurt the industry.
