Dr. Katherine Mortimer Endows Scholarship for Women in Metalcasting
Dr. Katherine E. Mortimer is committed to pro- viding future opportunities for women by making a significant financial contribution that will provide scholarship funding to women for their education in an underrepresented business sector. “I have lived a life serving and working in many areas that have had an underrepresentation of women,” said Dr. Mortimer. “I have gained a wealth of knowledge by serving in such work environments, and I strongly support opportunities for other women to do the same.” The foundry business is one of those businesses in which women are underrepresented. Dr. Mortimer believes that providing financial support, by means of a schol- arship, to women who have an interest in studying in a program related to the Foundry business will improve women’s opportunity to be employed in the Foundry business sector. Thus, the paradigm of underrepresentation of women in the foundry industry will change. Dr. Mortimer has endowed a Women in Metalcasting scholarship for the Foundry Educational Foundation with a $100,000 donation. Dr. Mortimer has very strong ties to the metalcast- ing industry. She is married to Mr. John H. Mortimer, P.E., who retired as the Chairman and CEO of Inductotherm. Mr. Mortimer dedicated more than 40 years of his executive and engineering expertise to Inductotherm. Also, Dr. Mortimer has been long time friends with Mrs. Karen Cervellero and Mr. Paul B. Cervellero, both of whom have many years of experi- ence with the metalcasting industry. Mr. Cervellero retired as President of Inductotherm. He then was Director of the American Foundry Society (AFS) for many years, and ultimately served as President of AFS. Mrs. Cervellero invested her time in numerous activities for both Inductotherm as well as AFS. Dr. Mortimer also has many additional family members, and numer- ous friends who continue to work in the metalcasting industry. Dr. Mor-
timer, known as Katherine, has been a pioneer for women in many ar- eas of the workforce. In 1975, at the age of 17, Katherine enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. At this time, there
were very few women in the U.S.M.C. She completed recruit training at Parris Island, S.C. Her occupational specialty was supply administration—the Marines who ensured everyone was outfitted with food, shelter, ammunition, and even toilet necessities. Her first duty station was Marine Corps Recruit Depot at Parris Island. She was then transferred to Camp S.D. Butler, Okinawa, where she served for 13 months, and was promoted to sergeant meritoriously. She then was stationed at 8th Marine Corps District, New Orleans, La. Katherine was then stationed at the 1st Marine Brigade, Kaneohe, Hawaii, where she was promoted to Staff Sergeant upon her arrival. Throughout her years of service, she continued to at- tend college at every opportunity. Katherine was hon- orably discharged after her four-year tour in Hawaii. After serving for ten years in the Marine Corps, Katherine was employed in the business world at a private investment firm in Princeton, N.J., a sports apparel business, and as an executive assistant to the Vice President of Engineering at Inductotherm Corporation. She worked in the business world for five years and then returned to college to complete her degree.
Katherine earned her Bachelor of Science degree at Rider University. She graduated Summa Cum Laude and was awarded the Andrew J. Rider Scholar Award and received the Brockelbank Scholarship. Upon graduation, she was hired as a teacher of business subjects at a large public secondary school district. After working as a teacher of secondary busi- ness education for a year, in 1993 Katherine married John H. Mortimer. She and John enjoy a marriage that includes their four children, and five grandchil- dren, all of whom they are quite proud. For many years, they shared hobbies such as boating, offshore fishing, and international travel. They support one another in all endeavors, and are an- chors to their family. They recently cel- ebrated their 21st wedding anniversary, and know
they will enjoy many more in the years to come.
