leads the way LTE connections in North America grew to 115 million, representing 30 per cent of total mobile subscriptions in the region at the end of the first quarter of 2014, according to a report from 4G Americas. This compares to a worldwide figure of just four per cent.

The North American market now accounts for 47 per cent of the world’s 245 million LTE connections.

“All the key success factors are contributing to LTE’s expanded coverage, smartphone penetration and subscriber growth in North America,” stated Vicki Livingston, head of communications at 4G Americas. “The factors in the success formula include LTE network evolution, planning and allocation of harmonised spectrum and coverage. These key ingredients coupled with regulatory innovation will allow the region to achieve more than twice the LTE penetration of any other region in the world for more than five years.”

The US and Canada added 14 million LTE connections in the first quarter of 2014 and 62 million LTE connections year-on-year. There are 47 commercial LTE networks now deployed in the US and Canada and 123 million HSPA connections.

Kristin Paulin, senior analyst at Informa Telecoms & Media, commented: “The rapid adoption of LTE, with worldwide connections more than doubling year-over- year to Q1 2014, has been

Pitch perfect Discovering Start-Ups 2014

The competition offers up to £60,000 research support, plus potential employment, for the top 10 researchers who outline their ideas for inventing the future.

Recognised as one of the world’s preeminent industrial research facilities and a centre of scientific and engineering excellence, few institutions have had as great an impact on modern society as Bell Labs. Among its many achievements and awards, Bell Labs has 12 Nobel Prize laureates on its impressive roll of researchers.

An opportunity to invent the

future Bell Labs, the research arm of Alcatel-Lucent, has announced a major international competition, open to innovators with the ability and vision to revolutionise the way we live, work, communicate, and collaborate.

The Bell Labs Prize has been launched to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the discovery of cosmic microwave background radiation, one of the strongest pieces of evidence supporting the Big Bang theory of the origin of the universe. This discovery in 1964 by Bell Labs scientists Arno Penzias and Robert A. Wilson earned the researchers a Nobel Prize in Physics and provided the basis for future astronomical discoveries.

“I am excited to see the ideas that come to light through this process, and to introduce talented young scientists and engineers into the Bell Labs community,” said Dr Marcus Weldon, president of Bell Labs and CTO of Alcatel-Lucent. “They will be joining some of the brightest scientists, engineers and mathematicians in the world, who continue to develop world-changing innovations.”

is starting its annual search for the most innovative wireless technologies and entrepreneurs from across the UK.

Run by Cambridge Wireless (CW) and Silicon SouthWest, the competition gives chosen finalists the opportunity to pitch business plans to wireless industry investors and experts. The judges include senior executives from companies including Google, IBM and Samsung Electronics.

“Discovering Start-Ups is a great showcase for the very best in UK wireless innovation from, mobile apps and social media services to hardware devices and network infrastructure,” said Soraya Jones, chief executive at CW. “With a new surge of budding business, academic and amateur entrepreneurs keen to make their mark, the competition is a great opportunity to get a kick- start and get noticed. We are delighted that Deloitte will be hosting the finals at its prestigious London venue, reflecting its commitment to support the ‘search for innovation’ and encourage new hi-tech business ventures.”
