One CSP created a music festival app that gave their subscribers access to rich content and clips while allowing the company to track festival goers mobile activity
Tracking down responsibilities in a complex vendor chain
The issue of how apparent simplicity can cause extra complexity also occurs in relationships between CSPs, their equipment vendors, systems integrators and outsourcers and for Jacq – and the CSPs – having access to independently sourced and validated performance data can be a major strategic asset during fault finding that involves complex commercial relationships and value chains. “It’s all too easy for blame to be shuffled between all the different entities involved in today’s network, applications and storage environment,” he observes. “Many CSPs now rely on their equipment vendors and other suppliers to develop differentiated services for them
– and they’re also often equally reliant on them for the actual running of their networks through outsourcing and managed services deals. When something goes wrong – as it inevitably will given the complexity of this new working environment – our independent role as a source and interpreter of accurate performance data can help both parties quickly resolve issues and assign responsibilities and ensure that contract criteria are being adhered to.”
Jacq also believes that the continuing commoditisation of network hardware, the use of virtualisation strategies and the entry into the 4G market of suppliers without a long and deep understanding of the operational realities of radio
