ith every passing month comes another raft of reports and announcements hailing the success of LTE in delivering faster speeds, achieving better QoE and breaking into new markets.

But how much of this is the usual industry hyperbole – and how much is truly groundbreaking achievement?

Well, if you talk to industry experts, there seems genuine surprise about just how successful the technology has been since the first networks were launched in 2009.

At a recent meeting of the Cambridge Wireless mobile broadband Special Interest Group, held in the GSMA offices in London, it was even suggested this was the first time the industry has under-promised and over-delivered.

The feeling is that the all-IP network is offering telcos far more opportunities and flexibility than first thought possible.

The challenge now for CSPs is how to monetise these opportunities and wrestle back some market control from the OTT community in creative and possibly mutually beneficial ways.

This is the focus of much of Issue 5 of LTE Today as we look at how CSPs can understand their customers better and, in turn, keep hold of their high value subscribers.

LTE networks offer telcos an extraordinary amount of information but the real skill is how to analyse and interpret this ‘big data’ and offer customers more tailored, personalised services. LTE
