News HETAS sees rise in training demand

The launch of the domestic Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) has increased demand for HETAS training, particularly for its biomass course.

According to newly released fig-

ures, there has been a 34% increase in the number of candidates attend- ing HETAS training courses com- pared to the previous 12 months. HETAS says it is the only competent person scheme specialising in solid fuel and biomass and offers a wide range of courses, from an intro- duction to solid fuel to the more advanced stove and biomass installer training and chimney system training.

HETAS training manager Andy Mathews said: “The solid fuel and biomass sector is growing, no doubt as a result of impetus from the RHI. We are constantly reviewing and revising our courses to meet demand and as well as catering for the solid fuel industry we also offer a range of courses ideal for gas and oil install- ers who are looking to expand their skills and offer biomass to their customers.” Refresher training is also proving popular with new legislation requir- ing that from June 2014 anyone registered with a competent person scheme must have up to date train-

ing qualifications. That means they must have attended either a training course or a refresher course within the last five years. The H006 system chimney system course has also proven popular with installers look- ing to provide a range of chimney solutions.

In total there are 20 HETAS

approved training centres in the UK and Ireland, with plans already in place for more centres to meet increasing demand. For more information about the

range of HETAS solid fuel and biomass courses visit www.hetas. co.uk/training.

CIPHE shows support for CO campaign

CIPHE (Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering) ceo, Kevin Wellman, is backing the campaign spearheaded by Plumb Center and Honeywell to change the law on carbon monoxide alarms. There is currently no legal require- ment for installers to fit a CO alarm

when a carbon-burning appliance is installed. The campaign is aiming to change this. Mr Wellman said: “We would like

to urge as many people as possible to sign the e-petition to force a debate in the House of Commons on this issue. CO alarms cost around £25, a

pittance when you think they could save a life, or prevent serious illness. If enough people sign the petition the government will have to listen, as the last thing anyone wants is public safe- ty and welfare to be compromised.” Support the campaign by signing the e-petition at www.no-to-co.co.uk
