Heat for former royal glasshouses A ProCon HT gas-fired condensing boiler from MHG Heating, specified by consulting engineers Martin Thomas Associates, has replaced two old boilers serving greenhouses at Osborne on the Isle of Wight. MHG also supplied a plate heat exchanger and flexible plastic flue lining system. The former royal residence was constructed as a summer home and rural retreat for Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. Paul Trew of Martin Thomas Associates said: “The previous cast-iron boilers serving the glasshouses were experiencing frequent failures so a decision was taken to replace them with a more reliable and efficient modern gas-fired condensing boiler. It was also necessary to protect the new boiler from any debris in the original cast-iron pipework system, which was achieved by using a plate heat exchanger as a system separator. The new boiler is on a pressurised primary circuit, while the system remains open-vented.” The 150kW ProCon HT boiler was installed by Cowes-based contractor Clarke’s Mechanical and has been connected to the existing brick stack, which has been re-lined with MHG’s flexible flue lining system. The boiler’s onboard controls allow the two greenhouses to be controlled independently of each other to enhance energy efficiency. MHG Heating

Air rotation heating for warehouse A Powrmatic TE61 500kW air rotation heater is delivering highly efficient heating at office furniture manufacturer Senator International’s warehouse in Lancashire, with additional loading bay heating from a VPC 90kW floor standing warm air heater. The system was designed by specialist HVAC installers CK Services 1990.Ltd. CK’s Andy Smith said: “We needed to give Senator a heating system that would maintain suitable environmental conditions for both staff and warehouse stock, while minimising energy consumption and carbon emissions. It was clear that a Powrmatic TE air rotation heater would meet these criteria more effectively than a distributed warm air or radiant system.” He added: “As a higher temperature was required for the loading area we also installed a VPC 90 warm air heater, enabling the TE heater to maintain low return temperatures and maximise performance. The heaters are controlled via the building management system, but the TE unit has a separate modulation function operated by a sensor in the return air section of the heater.” Powrmatic TE heaters use high efficiency axial fans which move large volumes of air through the space at relatively low temperatures, typically recycling the air within the space every 30 minutes.
